Stratified Turbulence

In the environment, fluids are often found in a state of stable stratification, where on average their density decreases with increasing height. This stable stratification provides for a restoring force within the fluid and enables the propagation of internal gravity waves. There is much to understand with regard to how stable stratification influences the properties of the turbulence across the scales. Some of the current problems we are working on is how stable stratification impacts the mechanisms of the energy cascades in the flow, and developing models that can predict the "patchiness" of stratified flows and mixing efficiencies and their parametric dependence.
